Craig William Macneill (“The Boy”, “Channel Zero: Candle Cove”) directs the film by exploring the days leading up to the savage crimes entangled in a storm of repression, exploitation and frustrated dreams.

  • The trailer presents everything one might expect from a strange reimagination of the famous unsolved murder case: blood spatter, abrupt clashes under a clothesline and many, many passionate looks between Sevigny and Stewart.
  • It also offers a fairly solid preview of the message and overall tone that the film may be trying to convey. The director Craig William Macneill is the last one to approach the story in his next film “Lizzie”, which reinterprets the notorious crime as a dark lesbian romance and full of tension. On August 4, 1892, around 11 AM, Lizzie claimed to have discovered the brutalized bodies of her parents. In interviews with the police, Lizzie offered contradictory accounts of the events that preceded and surrounded that day, which had filled with filial tension. Accused and acquitted of killing her father and stepmother on June 20, 1893, the story of Lizzie Borden has been the subject of speculation for centuries.

Countless artists have been inspired by optimistic history. The operas, the television dramas and the stories are based on the lives of the Bordens, trying to reconstruct the emotional world that surrounds the infamous murder of axes.

Macneill’s vision of events imagines that Lizze (Sevigny) and her maid (Stewart) became entangled in a forbidden love affair that led to the murder. The gothic aesthetic of New England differentiates this new project from the recent (and much more campier) opinion on the same subject, the special Lifetime 2014, “Lizzie Borden played an ax”, starring Christina Ricci in the role of the same name.

“Lizzie” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2018. Critics praised the film for its clever combination of drama and horror tropes.

“The film is fascinating, with Sevigny offering a fierce performance that inspires empathy despite, or perhaps because of, the horrible things the public knows Lizzie will finally do,” wrote critic Bryan Bishop of The Verge.

  1. “The murder sequence is horrible and chilling, and not just because of the violence itself, the way the acts affect both women is more disturbing and more memorable.”
